There is a delighting fauna including rare animals like the fire salamander or the badger, who is sharing his burrow with the fox since long. The hermit beetle (Osmoderma eremita), an inhabitant of old oaks, and bats are sharing the air space and in silent nights one can hear the little owl calling. Despite the fact that this area is close to the city of Nuremberg, it is fulfilling the FFH (Fauna-Flora-Habitat) criteria and therefore is a registered area of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas of the European Union. This means that the forest in its current form and idyll is preserved for the future.
