Caretaker's House

This is the so-called "Verwaltershaus" (Caretaker's House). It has been completed around 1566, i.e. it is almost as old as the Palas which has been built in 1561.

The entire ground floor is pervaded by a groined vault with powerful sandstone pillars. This vault made of tuff stone from the nearby "Sophienquelle" (Sophie's Spring) has been established in 1846 after the predecessor vault had collapsed.
The street side gable is indicating the year 1725. In this year the gable has been turned from timber frame into sand stone. In those times it was common practice using stone instead of wood for building or restoring west side gables. Among others, this was due to a severe lack of wood.
The western room (street side, left) of the floor above used to accomodate the village school. This school was sponsored by the owners of the castle. They also payed for the schoolmaster who lived next door as well as the school library. The other half of this floor was occupied by the caretaker.
